Protein and Amino Acids: Your Body's Building Blocks

Протеин и аминокиселини — Градивните елементи на твоето тяло | Pure Natura

Why is protein so important?

Protein is the main building block of the body — muscles, skin, hair, nails, enzymes, hormones, and antibodies are built from it. Without enough protein, the body cannot repair, grow, or function optimally.

Proteins are made up of amino acids — 20 in number, of which:

  • 9 essential (EAA) — the body cannot produce them itself; we must obtain them from food or supplements
  • 11 non-essential — the body can synthesize them itself

Essential Amino Acids (EAA) — why are they so important?

EAA (Essential Amino Acids) include all 9 essential amino acids, among which are the three BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine). They are responsible for:

  • Muscle synthesis — leucine directly activates muscle tissue building
  • Post-workout recovery — reduce muscle soreness and accelerate regeneration
  • Energy during training — BCAAs are oxidized directly in the muscles
  • Prevention of muscle breakdown — especially important during caloric deficit
  • Immune function — amino acids are necessary for antibody production

Collagen protein — the special protein for joints and skin

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body — making up about 30% of total protein content. It is the main structural protein of:

  • Skin — elasticity and hydration
  • Joints and cartilage — shock absorption and mobility
  • Bones — strength and density
  • Tendons and ligaments — flexibility and endurance

After the age of 25, collagen production decreases by about 1-2% annually. Supplements with hydrolyzed collagen provide directly absorbable collagen peptides.

Types of collagen:

  • Type I — skin, bones, tendons (most common)
  • Type II — cartilage and joints
  • Type III — skin and blood vessels
  • Marine collagen — highest bioavailability, rich in Type I

How much protein do you need?

  • Sedentary lifestyle: 0.8 g/kg body weight per day
  • Moderate activity: 1.2–1.6 g/kg per day
  • Intense workouts: 1.6–2.2 g/kg per day
  • Building muscle mass: up to 2.5 g/kg per day

When and how to take protein and amino acids?

  • EAA before/during workout — for energy and preventing muscle breakdown
  • EAA after workout — for accelerated recovery and muscle synthesis
  • Collagen in the morning on an empty stomach — for maximum absorption, with vitamin C for better synthesis
  • Collagen before sleep — the body regenerates tissues during sleep
