What are electrolytes and why are they so important?
Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals dissolved in body fluids. They regulate hydration, nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and the body's pH balance. Without them, no cell can function properly.
The main electrolytes in the body:
- Sodium (Na⁺) — regulates fluid volume and blood pressure
- Potassium (K⁺) — heart rhythm, muscle contractions, nerve signals
- Magnesium (Mg²⁺) — over 300 enzyme reactions, sleep, stress, muscles
- Calcium (Ca²⁺) — bones, muscle contractions, nerve conduction
- Chloride (Cl⁻) — maintains pH balance and digestion
- Phosphate (PO₄³⁻) — energy production (ATP), bones
Why isn't water alone enough?
Drinking too much water without electrolytes can dilute their concentration in the blood — a phenomenon called hyponatremia. The body needs the right balance between water and electrolytes for water to enter cells and hydrate them effectively.
Electrolytes are lost through:
- Sweat during exercise or hot weather
- Urine when taking diuretics or coffee
- Diarrhea and vomiting
- Stress and hormonal imbalance
- Low-calorie diets and fasting

Signs of electrolyte imbalance
Many people suffer from electrolyte deficiency without realizing it. Symptoms include:
- Fatigue and weakness without apparent cause
- Muscle cramps and twitching
- Headache and dizziness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Nausea and poor digestion
- Reduced concentration and "brain fog"
- Dry mouth despite drinking water
Electrolytes and sport — when do you need more?
During physical exertion, the body loses electrolytes through sweat — especially sodium and magnesium. Athletes and active people have significantly higher electrolyte needs:
- Before training — fuel the body for optimal performance
- During training — for workouts over 60 minutes or with heavy sweating
- After training — replenish lost minerals for faster recovery
- In hot weather — even without training, the body loses more electrolytes

How to maintain optimal electrolyte balance?
- Nutrition: Bananas (potassium), avocados (magnesium), sea salt (sodium), dairy products (calcium)
- Hydration: 2–3 liters of water per day, more with physical activity
- Supplements: Electrolyte complex — especially for sports, stress, or hot summer
- Avoid: Excessive caffeine and alcohol — they accelerate electrolyte loss
- In the morning: A glass of water with a pinch of sea salt and lemon — a quick electrolyte boost to start the day
